The conference was an excellent opportunity for postgraduate students to present their work to likeminded individuals in a supportive and productive environment. The conference also included workshops from expert academics on contemporary topics such as publishing, teaching, the RAE, and other issues pertinent to postgraduate students working in the highly political and controversial arena that is the University today.

Cultural Borrowings: A Study Day on Appropriation, Reworking and Transformation

Start:
March 19, 2008

University of Nottingham
Wednesday 19th March 2008

Throughout history, artists have appropriated, sampled or borrowed elements from pre-existing work for use in new cultural texts. When hip-hop artist Dangermouse mixed samples from The Beatles White Album with Jay-Z’s Black Album to produce The Grey Album; or when Todd Haynes paid homage to the works of Douglas Sirk in the film Far From Heaven (2002); or when Jean Rhys reworked Jane Eyre to tell the story of the creole Antoinette in Wide Sargasso Sea, they were all appropriating elements from prior cultural texts for use in the creation of new works.

This one day conference, in association with the MeCCSA Postgraduate Network, seeks to interrogate the nature of such cultural borrowings, looking at how we can draw together insights from across the disciplines in order to further develop academic models of appropriation, reworking and transformation.

Plenary Speakers will include Professor Christine Geraghty ( University of Glasgow) and Professor David Hesmondhalgh ( University of Leeds).

Minding the Gap: Reflections on Media Practice & Theory

Start:
May 12, 2007

One-day training symposium for Postgraduates & Early Career Researchers

Reuters Institute, Oxford
Saturday 12th May 2007

Keynote Speaker: Professor Brian Winston, University of Lincoln

There is an unmistakable gap between intellectual models of mass media institutions and practices, and the ways that practitioners experience the media. All too often, media theorists lack personal experiences of their topics of study, and university departments separate theory and practice in their internal organisation. This training day  for postgraduate research students and researchers in the first five years of an academic career  explored the relationship between media theories and mass media practices across three thematic workshops.

The contributors were researchers and practitioners concerned with factual / non-fiction-based mass media that engages with and represents the ‘real world’ through journalistic and documentary formats, and whose products are intended for mass or substantial public circulation – broadcasting, print, photography, film, web, and multimedia. Fields beyond the scope of the training day included the electronic gaming industry, PR and marketing, the music industry; also productions primarily intended for artistic or aesthetic purposes or consumption within the education sector or minor non-public audiences.

The event included three workshops
- Workshop 1: Media Practice as Methods of Research and Presentation
- Workshop 2: Theoretical Models in Mass Media Practice
- Workshop 3: Double vocations: Mass Media Practice and Theory

Work…

We are currently putting together a dynamic, interesting and varied conference programme which we hope will provide a lively context in which to talk about and experience the diversity of research and practice in our field.

…and play!

As well as enjoying the intellectual stimulation provided by the conference programme, we hope that you also find time to experience something of our dynamic city in your downtime. Coventry is a great city to visit and explore, even in January, with the Cathedral being a major attraction. The city also plays host to the latest BBC radio station, BBC Coventry and Warwickshire. Or perhaps take in the latest exhibition at the recently revamped Herbert Museum and Art Gallery. The venue for the conference, Coventry TechnoCentre, was joint winner of the Best Conference Venue category in the 2006 Godiva Awards.

Eats

Rather than the same old, same old conference dinner of boring mass catering and being stuck on a table with folks you don’t like, this year we have arranged a networking supper instead at the fantastic Herbert café (Thursday, 7.30-9.30 pm). Maria, who runs the café franchise has an excellent and creative group of staff who have promised to give us a wonderful culninary experience – the quality of the intellectual experience will be entirely down to us however! Local band Honeytrap will be providing the musical accompaniment, so make sure that you have your ticket for this delight. You can buy your ticket when you make your registration booking or at the registration desk during the conference on Wednesday only – price: £15.

Postgraduates

The postgraduate research student community at Coventry School of Art and Design are pleased to welcome postgraduate students to the conference and invite you to join them for coffee, chat and networking before the main conference reception at 6.30pm. TechnoCentre restaurant, Wednesday 10 January, 5.15pm – 6.15pm.

Film festival

The Coventry i-blink film festival opens on the afternoon of Friday 12 January and goes on to Sunday 14 January. It is the first international film festival to be hosted in the city. The showcase event is a screening of short films made by new filmmakers shortlisted from the i-blink scriptwriting competition. As part of the prize-giving event, Pratibha Parmar will be talking about her latest film, Nina’s Heavenly Delights. The festival will include screenings of shorts and feature films produced by new talent, workshops and discussions, at a variety of venues in Coventry. Your ticket will give you entry to any and all of the i-blink festival events. You can buy your ticket when you make your registration booking or at the registration desk during the conference on Wednesday and Thursday only – price: £10.

Published proceedings

We are currently in discussion with Cambridge Scholars Publishing, who are interested in publishing a thematic selection of papers from the conference. If you would like your paper to be considered for inclusion in the collection, please provide a chapter-length version of your paper (approx 8,000 words) to Jane Wynn by 2 March 2007.

‘Working with sound’ workshop

Please note that places are limited for the ‘working with sound’ workshop on the morning of Thursday 11 January (11am – 12.30pm), so please book your place early at the registration desk.
