Shelley Thompson is the Chair of the MeCCSA Postgraduate Network and a co-opted member of the Executive Committee since July 2009.Shelley Thompson is a PhD student at Bournemouth University studying how nanotechnology is reported in The Guardian and The New York Times newspapers, both their print and online editions. Before returning to an academic setting in 2007, Shelley worked as a professional journalist in the United States for several years. She reported for a variety of publications from a small weekly newspaper to an international financial publication to a mid-sized daily newspaper. Her most recent work in journalism was at the Eagle-Tribune and Derry News newspapers in New Hampshire where she won several awards for her reporting, including a first-place award for investigative reporting and a First Amendment Award, both from the New England Press Association. The awards were the result of a public-records investigation she conducted. Shelley holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst (2000) and a master’s degree in journalism studies from Cardiff University, Wales (2009).
