The Postgraduate Networking Project
The UKCGE report (2001) on research training emphasised the significance of dissemination of research findings and experience both within and external to higher education institutions.
An ADC-LTSN report by Katharine Sarikakis on Doctorate Education in Communication, Culture and Media Studies in the UK suggests one of the most important aspects of reading for a PhD in the field is the degree of isolation felt by a very high number of students. The report also suggests that this particular issue be looked at by the natural home/s of scholars in the field, that is the relevant associations in the UK, through the creation and support of networks but also a form of mentoring that may take place not only between established and new academics, but also among PhD students.
This project builds on two existing initiatives funded by the ADC-LTSN.
The first initiative is the Postgraduate Network, also funded and supported by Media Communication and Cultural Studies Association, which aims to bring together postgraduate students in media, communication and cultural studies from different intellectual traditions and cultural backgrounds in order to form research, and teaching and learning networks and also ensure peer support.
The second initiative is the Developing a Research Training Resource on the Web project, which aims to respond to the needs of research students and supervisors in art and design via a web-based resource.
Peer networking and knowledge brokering is vital for the ongoing development of a supportive environment for existing and future research degree students.
This project intends to provide case studies of completed research degrees in media, communication and cultural studies in order to facilitate networking and the sharing of good practice within these fields.
