Department of Media and Film
University of Sussex, Brighton

I am a second-year DPhil candidate and associate tutor in the Department of Media and Film at the University of Sussex, Brighton. Before coming to England for an MA in Media & Cultural studies, I completed my candidature degree in Social sciences at the University of Namur ( Belgium), followed by a Licence in Communication studies at UCL in Louvain-la-Neuve ( Belgium), including a year spent at the University of Paris-III, Sorbonne Nouvelle as part of the Erasmus European exchange programme. Alongside my academic career, I have worked in different sectors of the media industry, including in Belgian newspapers and as copy-editor for a French television company, and I am also an occasional translator for French academic journals.

My thesis project, provisionally titled “Reco(r)ding Sound as Art: Phonography and the Mediations of a Sonic Subculture” is co-supervised by Drs Caroline Bassett and Michael Bull and deals with the growing importance of sound and listening as alternative theoretical paradigm from the perspective of the creative use of non-musical sound and noise in the art world. Bridging the scholarly and artistic sides of this ‘auditory turn’, I explore a variety of sound-based practices and their practitioners using the conceptual and methodological frameworks provided by sociologies of art and of the senses. Instead of working from or towards a delineation of sound art as an aesthetically autonomous genre, I believe it is more fruitful to think of these activities as products of emerging sonic (sub)cultures, i.e. networks of collectives, bodies, devices, procedures and spaces, all gathered in the co-formation of new objects of appreciation (sound, noise, etc.) together with appropriate modes of listening, thinking and talking about them.

I have presented my research in various conferences in the UK and abroad, such as the 9th International Meeting for the Sociology of Arts ( Toulouse, France), the first SoundAsArt conference in Aberdeen and an interdisciplinary conference in Poland on the ‘discourses and practices of deception, surveillance and transparency’.

Forthcoming publications comprise an article on sound arts and the regime of the studio for the international e-journal Culture Machine (issue 9, ‘Recordings’), a chapter in a French collection of essays on the sociology of ‘middlebrow’ arts, and an extended review essay for Senses and Society on the value of the Neutral in Roland Barthes and François Jullien.

I am a member of the European-Francophone branch of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music (IASPM), the Center for Research into Material Digital Cultures, and I am part of the team of postgraduate students currently organising the 2008 Postgraduate MeCCSA Conference at the University of Sussex.
