WMSN History

The Network was set up at the MeCCSA annual conference in 2001. There followed a call from the Executive’s Membership Activities Group for women to join a Network coordinating committee and the first Network event was held in the autumn.

The launch of the Network took place in September 2001 at a one-day event at Derby University. This involved two roundtable sessions: Promoting Research – Fund-seeking and Journal Publication and Research Work in Progress. There was also a session on how to develop the Network itself.

Since then, there have been two events in 2002. The first in June was held at the University of North London and considered Feminist Theory in Media Studies – Contemporary Perspectives. Speakers included Yvonne Tasker and Lyn Thomas who looked at ways of applying media theories to film and audience studies. A panel considering The Media and Feminist Values – with Christine Geraghty, Annabelle Sreberny and Elizabeth Wilson, concluded the event.

The latest network event was held at Coventry University and offered a roundtable on media studies post-September 11 with Gillian Branston, Val Hill and Jane Widdess. This was followed by a discussion on Pedagogy and Power introduced by Cindy Carter, Angela Devas, Natalie Fenton and Heather Nunn.
