The Public Intellectual: Feminism, Power, Celebrity
Date and time: Tuesday 25 May 2010, 10am – 5 pm
Location: British Library, Euston Road, London; Room MR 4

As more and more academics develop public profiles on television, radio and the internet, and research policy is increasingly geared to social and economic ‘impact’, this is an exciting time to reflect on issues related to the gendered public intellectual. This one-day symposium brings together an inter-disciplinary group of scholars to examine gender politics and the figure of the female public intellectual in Britain today. Topics of discussion include: feminism and the public intellectual; gender, communication and the public sphere; gender and the academic star system; intellectuals and celebrity culture; celebrity feminism; and researching women’s scholarship in the public sphere.
