DIVERSITY OF EXPERTISE

Unlike previous REF cycles, there is no requirement for nominations for REF2029 roles. Instead the process is one of self-nomination as detailed above.

This is to ensure a diversity of expertise and to encourage applications from individuals with a wide range of backgrounds and experiences, including other sectors, policy work, and community-based experience.

Specifically, the REF team is seeking diverse experiences across:

  • disciplinary and sub-disciplinary areas, within the 34 UoAs
  • diverse expertise in different forms and stages of research and impact
  • careers and career stages
  • regionality and across the UK nations
  • institutions
  • institution type

MECCSA INVOLVEMENT

Whilst the current process is one of self-nomination, MeCCSA is working closely with the REF team and the Academy of Social Sciences (of which we are a member) to ensure learned societies remain involved and support the process.

MeCCSA especially encourage colleagues to consider applying for roles in the two panels immediately related to our fields:

  • Subpanel 33: Music, Drama, Dance, Performing Arts, Film and Screen Studies
  • Subpanel 34: Communication, Cultural and Media Studies, Library and Information Management

Work from our members and in our fields were also featured and was highlighted by the REF2021 overview panels in:

  • Sub-panel 23: Education
  • Subpanel 27: English Language and Literature
  • Subpanel 32: Art and Design: History, Theory and Practice

We also recognise that work by members may have been and will be submitted to or assessed by other sub-panels of course.

Einar Thorsen, Chair of MeCCSA
